The reproductive part in flower of mustard.
Aim -To study the reproductive part in flower of mustard.
Principle-The male reproductive part of a flower are the stamens collectively called androecium and the female reproductive parts are the pistil collectively called gynoecium. The individual units of stamen consists of a filament which bear the anther lobes. Gynoecium consists of stigma, style and ovary. There are various differences found in both of stamens and carpels of different flowers.
Required material-Mustard flowers, needles, foreceps, razor, brush, side coverslips, watch glass, magnifying glass, disecting microscope, compound microscope.
Procedure-
1. Observe the flower with naked eye, hand lens, or under a disecting microscope. Study their reproductive parts and count the number of stamen and record their cohesive and adhesive features carefully.
2. After that cut LS. of flower and place it on a side and observe its various characters like placement of anthers, position of ovary.
3. Now mount one stamen on a slide and observe its characters like, attachments of filaments to anther, dehiscence of anther lobes.
4. Mount the pistil on side and study style, stigma and ovary. Cut the TS. of ovary and observe. Numbers of locules, type of placentation.
Observation-
Inflorescence Raceme Flower Ebracteate, ebracteolate, pedicellate, complete, actinomorphic, bisexual, tetramerous, hypogynous and cyclic. Calyx Sepals 4, arranged in 2 whorls of 2 each, polysepalous, imbricate aestivation, deciduous, green. Corolla Petals 4, polypetalous, cruciform, valvate aestivation, yellow Androecium – Stamens 6, arranged in two whorls, polyandrous, tetradynamous (4 inner long and2 outer short), anthers dithecous, basifixed, introse, dehiscence is longitudinal. Gynoecium-Bicarpellery, syncarpous, parietal placentation, ovary superior, unilocular but becomes bilocular due to false septum (replum), stigma bifid.
Fruit -Siliqua
